Arrrrrh me hearties, and shiver me timbers , does that give you some clue as to what Eugenia and Gerri are talking about in this episode! Pirates are baddies that we love to love! So what is a “pirate”, and what do they have to do about Sci Fi and Fantasy well that’s what Gerri and Eugenia talk about! Pirates in spaceships include Firefly, Farscape and even some could say Doctor Who, well the odd episode or two! Eugenia and Gerri could not resist putting a picture of Johnny Depp on this podcast they unfortunately don’t have an interview with him, but they do have one with the “sane” and really the “rudder” and first mate of The Black Pearl , Joshamee Gibbs otherwise known as Kevin McNally. This actor who you will recognise from many a Sci Fi show talks about his obsession with “Tony Hancock”, his work as an actor who has managed to build a career across two continents and more! Bright colours, fantastical costumes, and insane plots were a hallmark of shows from the sixties and Gerri and Eugenia talk about them in this episode! The sixties, an era of change, new freedoms, the psychedelic colour schemes and of course the music all combined to create new ways of doing things and TV was no different! With themes still relevant to our time of “women’s lib” and “diverse families”, Gerri and Eugenia talk about who could be called the first real woman super hero on television and a family that could only be called diverse and in all of the ways that you can consider! These shows of course include Batman and The Munsters, two of the iconic shows of the sixties they were fun, frivolous and fantastic. In this podcast Eugenia and Gerri once again discuss one of their favourite TV shows and that of course is Doctor Who! They talk abut how Doctor Who tried to up the anti and introduced what could only be called the “Girl Friday” of Doctor Who, who was trendy, and very, very talkative! This of course could be none other than the indomitable Jo Grant! Companion to the 3rd Doctor and who at the time was a member of the show as it made innovations in the use of “special effects” yes even with the use of lots of quarries, cardboard and of course monsters who even then looked, well the only word is funny! It’s cold outside, no kind of atmosphere, all alone more or less… Any fan of Red Dwarf will be able to complete the rest of that song and of course the only way that you can sing it, loudly, and this is the show that Gerri and Eugenia will be discussing in this episode. For the last 28 years intermittently this show has been on the screens of Sci Fi fans all over the world. Whilst there have only been 10 seasons it is always eagerly anticipated and fans look forward for latest adventures of what can only be called a “motley crew”!
Red Dwarf is the adventure for the “everyman/women”. We can all see ourselves blunder through the things that life chucks at us and just like the crew in Red Dwarf, we hope that we will come out the other end with, if not success, at least still alive. They are able to bring something to their listeners that has not been heard by many people before and that is an interview with the late, great Jon Pertwee, the 3rd Doctor and their (yes, they are counting) 5th Doctor on their show! While Enterprise did not make it to the seven seasons showing of all the other modern incarnations of the franchise it is still worth a watch and gives us more information to add to the canon of the Star Trek universe.
Whilst there were many great episodes, season 4 stood out and introduced us to the backstories of many of the species and our knowledge of them from the original series. These included how the Klingons played around with Noonan Soong’s genetic work and got their forehead ridges, introduced us to the Borg and of course the beginning of the Vulcan reformation and their path to the use of logic and how Humans overcame bigotry and xenophobia and became the humanity we see in the later series. Gerri and Eugenia also talk about the fan fiction of Star Trek and how it has inspired many fans to take the franchise in their own hands and create Star Trek worlds of their own. Episode 110 – Superman Continues – Margot Kidder

Some characters just turn out to be iconic and Superman is just one of those! He has been round since 1938 (looks good for his age hey!) and has provided the world with inspiration, someone to hero worship, and some damn fine entertainment since then! Superman has appeared in just about every form of entertainment from comic books, to radio, television and movies and there never seems to be a “him again” moment, we just can’t get enough. In this episode Eugenia and Gerri talk about him in all his incarnations and they have an interview with someone very special. That very special interview is with Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane in the 1980s movies with Christopher Reeve. These movies brought a whole new dimension to the Legend of Superman, with what were then ground-breaking special effects and again made everyone want to be from a different planet who came to Earth with superpowers! Margot Kidder is one of Eugenia and Gerri’s favourite interviews, with Margot not afraid to talk about her life “warts and all”. Every now and then the Antipodes does something fantastic and those little islands to the right of Australian (if Oz is really at the bottom of the world), called New Zealand does something fantastic! Whilst they could be talking about The Hobbit, Gerri and Eugenia are not! They are talking about The Almighty Johnsons, a fantastic and little known show about Norse Gods, New Zealand culture and with really cute main characters. NZ is a funny country, just look at the NZ Airlines safety instructions on YouTube and you will understand! Being the first in the world to welcome in the New Year, NZ’ers have a way of looking at things differently and they did just that with this show! They are a country of migrants and are very welcoming so why wouldn’t the gods like Oden, Thor and all those other wonderful, eccentric characters from Scandinavia want to go there too? This funny, dramatic and clever little show is one of their favourites and Gerri and Eugenia have an interview with one of the main cast the wonderful Dean O’Gorman who played Anders, otherwise known as Bragi, the god of poetry and in his present form (of course it would be this) a PR guru! Yes, Eugenia and Gerri are talking about Star Trek again, and this time it is about the many faces seen and unseen! Sometimes actors appear as different characters in TV shows and its incarnations and that is what we have in this episode, in fact they have interviews with actors who have a combined 80+ years in the business. Eugenia and Gerri interview Suzie Plakson and Morgan Sheppard! Some may ask, whom did they play (yes, you will recognise them when you see them)? Suzie known to fans as K’Ehleyr the Klingon with a sense of humour, Dr Selar, (A character from the TNG episode Morgan was in) and Q, the mother of Q’s child Q and of course Tarah the Andorian from Enterprise. Morgan first appeared in the TOS movie Final Frontier, then onto Ira Graves in Schiziod Man (with Susie), Qatai in Voyager and then a Vulcan in Star Trek (2009), the only series they missed was DS9! Ever wondered who was behind producing classic Doctor Who DVDs Whovians have on their shelves, well wonder no longer! Gerri and Eugenia have been able to interview some of the people who are responsible for us to be able to revisit the classic stories, and complete some of the missing stories so that we can still watch them. Firstly, they interview Dan Hall (who at the time of the interview was) Commissioning Editor of Classic Doctor Who DVD production. Secondly, an interview with Austen Atkinson, founder of Planet 55 Studios, along with one of the animators responsible for animating missing episodes from The Reign of Terror, a 1st Doctor story, as well as Moonbase, a 2nd Doctor story. It was through this painstaking animating process that fans around the world are able to view completed stories that were thought lost forever. Resistance is futile; you will listen to this episode as Eugenia and Gerri talk Borg. Are they the best villains ever come up with in a Sci Fi show? Whilst this species (if you can call them that), first came to our attention with the first appearance of Q and proved to Starfleet that there were some nasty surprises out there in the big bad Universe! So, where did they come from? There are many different ideas to where the originated, including, nano technology, to the integration of V’ger and Ilia and many more! So whom are they talking with in this show, the lovely funny and very talented Amber Benson, actor, author, director and producer! So, they discuss the (at the time) intriguing relationship between Willow and Tara, the shock of her Tara’s death. Tara showed strength of character and took on the role of the stabiliser for the “Scooby Gang” with the voice of reason! This is our tribute to Terry Pratchett! Long Long ago in a place far away a mind found a world that was on a disc supported by four elephants standing on the back of a giant turtle called the Great A’Tuin. That mind was the fantastical one of Sir Terry Pratchett inventor of the Disc World and the many wonderful characters that reside there! Terry is a social commentator and this is reflected in his many books. Terry is such a master of telling a tale that it is only when you reflect back on the story (that you could not put down) that you know that what the story is really about! However, every one of them is full of fun and whimsy. With that in mind Gerri and Eugenia invited one of their friends Jo, who is as fanatical about Terry as Gerri is! So they discuss the world of Terry Pratchett, discuss the characters who they love and who is their favourite. Who is your favourite Discworld favourite or is it just like Gerri’s which changes every time she reads a new book? Terry and his daughter have also set up a Production Company and plan to make television series about the Discworld, keep checking the net to see when or if they may be transmitted!

Farscape, what a show? How many of you have watched this Australian show? Well, Gerri and Eugenia and are proud to say “Made in Australia”, this is a show that breaks the mould in the use of Muppets! Well not Muppets but animatronics, done so well that you actually see the characters as real and find that you invest them with feeling and reality and the show is full of fun, suspense and damn good action! The show took us a little further in the imaginations of make-up artists and their vision of what an alien would look like. We had black and white, red and blue skin, tentacles coming from the head and even a ship that was a sentient being! Jim Henson’s Creature workshop was able to create characters that were multi-layer as well as a few “nut-jobs”, action heroes and some more really, really nutjobs! In this podcast Gerri and Eugenia get to talk with one of the actors from the series none other than Gigi Edgley who played Chiana, the black and white alien who may be classed as one of the nutjobs!!! Gigi is a method actor, singer, writer and now “show-host”. Gigi now hosts Brian Henson’s show, “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge” where you get to see how animatronics are made and used in movies and TV. Stories such as these have inspired us for thousands of years and television and film have since their invention given us many interpretations of these stories! Eugenia and Gerri talk about the variations over the years and how film and program makers can at time sanitise history and the violence. All of us remember that time on Saturday morning when we watched the cartoons! Our parents happy that we were occupied and able to get a sleep-in on that day they did not have to go to work! So, if you have those memories Gerri and Eugenia have the podcast for you! Cartoons have played a big part in the entertainment that we remember from our youth and of course many of us tried to do the voices of those characters we love! How many can do the Woody the woodpecker laugh or the Bugs Bunny’s “What’s up Doc” and more. Well in this podcast they talk about what has become the branch of acting that they are most enamoured with “voice acting”! This show is about a human superhero, no special super powers (except what lotsa money can buy), showing us what commitment and effort can achieve. With the newest incarnation being very dark and a flashback in each episode we have the past and the future of what makes and what happens when a superhero takes on the world. Arrow has many interesting characters with some of them even female, strong, purposeful and funny with one as the geek and the other The Black Canary. As a Geek if you could not have a TARDIS, then the next best thing was a Stargate! If you are a fan of the show, have Eugenia and Gerri got a treat for you! In this episode Eugenia and Gerri discuss the many incarnations of Stargate from the film to SG1 to Universe, which was great and which was not! They discuss the strong characters that appeared in this franchise and that were not only limited to the men! Many films do not make a good transition to the smaller screen, but Stargate was one of them, it was full of humour, did not take itself seriously (well maybe Universe did) and allowed us all to think that it could be one of us. In this episode, Eugenia and Gerri talk about Buck Rogers. Buck has a long history first appearing in 1929 in the iconic Science Fiction magazine Amazing Stories. A Magazine that launched and in fact defined the genre of pulp fiction! So, why are they talking about an 85-year-old hero? Set in the future year 2419, this hero has appeared in comics, serial movies and of course television series as well, Buck has been influencing heroes since his first appearance! Eugenia and Gerri discuss how this hero has changed over the years, how the changing times have also influenced the presentation of women, and how they changed from screamers to leaders. The 1979 – 1981 “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century” television show is the one that they particularly discuss in this episode, which was on TV when little else in this genre was transmitted. There have been many actors who have taken on the role of Doctor Who! Some say that the eighth Doctor was the one that killed off the series in the 1996 Doctor Who movie and although it was a hit in the UK it did not meet its intended audience in the US and therefore did not progress to a series as was hoped. This showing of the Doctor introduced some new concepts of the Doctor and his first kiss on screen. These concepts and the kiss proved to cause many a discussion throughout the Whovian universe, was the Doctor half human, should he kiss his companion, was he above all of this? Well the human bit may not have survived but by heck the kissing did!!! In this episode Gerri and Eugenia discuss all of the above and more and have a special treat for all Whovians. They interview not only the eighth Doctor but they also have his companion. Every now and again a show comes along that is a little bit different! Sometimes it is the premise or sometimes it is innovation with new technology, and that is what happened with Sanctuary! This show was ground breaking in that it sought input from the Sci Fi community before the show was even aired and then was released for free on YouTube before being picked up by the then Sci Fi, now Syfy channel. In this episode Eugenia and Gerri talk about what they thought of the innovations that came with this show, the interesting Canadian texture that was brought to the show and what it takes in the 21st Century for a show to make it on TV! They also get to interview Ryan Robbins, who plays Henry Foss, the geeky tech wiz and a Lycanthrope, who says that canines don’t use tech? Ryan has been in many Sci Fi and Fantasy shows. Many of us have a favourite cartoon, animated film or Japanese anime and in that, we have a favourite character! As we watch the screen these characters feel alive and we invest in them, we enjoy how they react and how they come across as real, but, they are only (well up until now) 2D frames of some very good drawings hand or computerised and put together with sound and music! So what really brings these characters to life? Well, in this episode Gerri and Eugenia discuss that, they talk about the words that are said and the actors who make them come alive with their use of voice. In this episode they talk to some of the greats in the voice actor world with interviews with Steve Blum, Kyle Hebert, and Scott McCord but in reality they are now just interviewing these three but hundreds of characters from the world of the cartoon!
